Welcome to Shrine... Devotional jewelry shrines & nichos honoring patron saints, deities, and loved ones.The idea of Shrine Jewelry came to me as I looked for a way to carry my family's memory and/or favorite saint on my person.  Wanting to create something unique, I happily discovered these wonderful tin *nichos. They seemed to naturally combine well with semi-precious stones.  Together, both stone and metal create a rustic feel and add subtle visual weight of each jewelry piece.
*In South America it is common to find nichos.  Traditionally nichos are tin and glass cases that are used as shrines to display images of saints, honored religious figures or to display memorabilia of loved ones.

PATRON SAINTS/DEITY INFORMATION
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
It is interesting to note that the Catholic church does not make saints - they only recognize them. This done so through a process known as Cannonization. The first saints were martyrs who died for their faith. They served as examples of what could be attained when living a Christian-based life.  Catholics believe that since a saint has reached heaven they would make strong advocates for their humanly needs.  Thus, when you hear a Catholic say, "I'll say a prayer to St. Jude for you" what they really mean is that they are asking St. Jude to intercede on your behalf, which in this case, would be that an impossible cause be granted.
Our Lady of Guadalupe...
This is our best-selling necklace and is comprised of a rusted tin/glass nicho, oval-shaped turquoise and blocked-shaped Fallstone (also known as dyed Magnesite) beads. This color combination is an artistic interpretation of the Southwest. All Shrines are enclosed in a beautiful, paper 'Shrine' with a description of the image appearing on the backside.
In 1531, a "Lady" appeared to a Mexican native, Cuauhtlatoatzin (Eagle That Talks) or more commonly known now as Juan Diego. He was among the largest and lowest of social castes, was a field worker, landowner, and a childless widower. Every weekend he would walk 15 miles to a small village, Tlateloco, to receive instruction in the Catholic faith. It was during one of these three-and-a-half hour walks that the first apparition appeared.
The Blessed Virgin Mary appeared to Juan Diego at Tepeyac, a hill northwest of Mexico City and spoke to him in his native tongue, Nahuatl. She instructed him to have the bishop build a temple on the site. As a testament to her appearance, she sent him to pick Castilian roses from the hillside, wrap them in his tilma (a poor-quality cactus cloth) and present them to the bishop. This was indeed unusual because it was winter and Castilian roses are not indigenous to Mexico. Unbeknownst to him, the Blessed Mother superimposed her image onto his cloth. Upon opening the cloth, the roses fell to the floor and her image appeared before the Bishop. Construction of the temple began soon after.
Today, the cloth remains intact and hangs in the Basilica in Tepayac. Her image, as well as her message of love and compassion, and the universal promise of help and protection to all mankind are described in the Nican Mopohua, a 16th century document written in native Nahuatl language. Many miracles, cures and interventions are attributed to her and her shrine in Mexico City is the second most visited Catholic churches in the world.
Juan Diego spent the remainder of his life devoted to the Blessed Mother and died on May 30, 1548, at the age of 74. He was declared blessed by Pope John Paul II at the Vatican and canonized on July 31st, 2002 in the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City. St. Juan Diego is considered the patron saint of humility and protector and advocate of indigenous peoples.
